The story is rather trite -- in a way that only British detective novels can be. Not a criticism but an observation. Local boy (lad, I guess in Yorkshire) made good returns to his hometown to restart his singing career and is murdered. Harry and his team are on the job to uncover the culprit. Like most British mysteries, there are myriad potential suspects and a regular "warren" of misdirection.DCI Harry Grimm is one of my favorite detectives in this genre. Harry may have a temper, but he is actually a warm-hearted and gentle human being. I'm waiting for Rebecca to warm up to Harry. Do I sense a thaw on it's way? Sadly, the novel itself is rather hackneyed and too much reliant on what I call the "Agatha Christie Model". The characterizations of the suspects are superficial -- the worst areGeyron. I'm not a heavy metal fan and I really don't know anything about that culture, but Mr. Gatward's depiction is too stereotypical and does not work well as one of the red herrings that he is trying for. Sigh! I was disappointed at the glaring faux pas of police procedure when Gordy and Jim coerce a confession from a dog-napper after the he has asked to contact an attorney (okay, a solicitor). Don't know about British courts,, but American courts would throw out the case just based on that gaff.Also, where are we going with the animal-napping stuff. A distraction that is resolved too quickly (tho' not the murder of Neil from the previous novel).So, I go back to my original statement about Harry Grimm. He is likeable, sympathetic, and a character with whom we can connect. The same can be said about his team. Despite the predictable nature of the stories, it is the characters who make this series worth reading. I can recommend this book and this series just on the strength of those people. I enjoy all the Harry Grimm series. In this book, Harry and team are called in to investigate the horrendous death of a Welsh who was returning to public life (following the death of his wife and other problems) with an album release in the church of the tiny village where he was brought up. Friends and villagers gathered to see the home town boy in triumphant return. The event is crashed by two Satanists. The next morning, the singer is found horribly mutilated and surrounded by Satanist markings. When the murderer is discovered, I was surprised by who it turned out to be.
